Boxer Colors Explained

Boxers come in fawn, brindle, reverse brindle and white, and many carry white markings called flash. The color does not change a Boxer's temperament. It changes how the dog looks, how it sunburns and sometimes how the price is set.

The five coats at a glance

Coat What it looks like Learn more
Fawn Tan to deep red with a black mask Fawn Boxer puppies
Brindle Dark tiger stripes over a fawn base Brindle Boxer puppies
Reverse brindle Heavy stripes that look almost black Reverse brindle Boxer puppies
White Mostly or entirely white coat White Boxer puppies
Flashy White chest, paws and face over fawn or brindle Flashy Boxer puppies

Fawn is a range, not one shade

Fawn can be a pale sand or a deep mahogany red. Breeders and owners sometimes use the word red for the darker end, but it is the same color family. The black mask on the muzzle is part of the classic Boxer face.

Pattern versus color

Brindle is a pattern laid over a fawn base. The stripes can be thin and light or thick and dark. When the stripes become so dense that the base barely shows, the coat is called reverse brindle. Flash is the white trim that can appear on top of any of these.

Does color affect health or personality?

Color does not decide temperament. Coat color can matter for skin and eyes, though. White dogs sunburn faster and need shade, and pale eyed dogs may be more light sensitive. Whatever color you pick, ask about the parents' health tests rather than choosing on looks alone. Our Boxer health guide explains which tests to ask for.

Color and price

Rarer coats are often priced higher, and registration type also moves the price. See the Boxer puppy price page for how we set prices from 900 to 5,000.

Quick answers

How many Boxer colors are there?

Most Boxers are fawn or brindle. White is the third main coat, and flash markings can appear on all of them.

Is a black Boxer a real color?

A solid black Boxer is not part of the breed standard. Very dark dogs are usually heavily striped reverse brindles.

Which Boxer color is the calmest?

None. Temperament comes from the parents and early handling, not the coat.
