Boxer Puppy Feeding Guide

Feed a Boxer puppy a complete large breed puppy food, split into three or four meals a day at first and two meals after about six months. Follow the amounts on the bag, adjust by body condition and keep portions steady rather than free feeding.

Choose the right food

Large breed puppy foods control calories and minerals so bones grow at a safe pace. Adult food is not right for a puppy, and a food built for tiny breeds will not suit a Boxer. Look for a named meat first and a complete and balanced statement on the label. Ask your vet if you have questions.

How much to feed

Start with the bag's chart for your puppy's expected adult weight, then adjust. You should feel the ribs under a thin layer of fat. A slightly lean Boxer is healthier for joints than a heavy one. Use the Boxer growth chart to track weight.

Switching food

Any change should take about a week. Mix a little new food with the old and shift the ratio each day. A fast switch often causes loose stools.

Treats and chews

Treats should stay a small part of the day. Use bits of the regular kibble for training. Avoid cooked bones, grapes, raisins, chocolate and anything with xylitol.

Lowering the risk of bloat

Bloat, also called gastric dilatation and volvulus, is an emergency in deep chested dogs. Feed measured meals, use a slow feeder if your puppy gulps and keep hard play away from mealtime by an hour or so. If your puppy has a swollen belly, retches without producing anything or seems in pain, go to an emergency vet at once. More conditions to watch for are in the Boxer health guide.

Water and potty timing

Offer fresh water all day, but pick it up a couple of hours before bed. Puppies often need to go out soon after eating, which makes house training easier. The wider routine is in our Boxer puppy care guide.

Budget for food

A large dog eats a lot. Add food to your plan using the Boxer puppy cost breakdown.

Quick answers

Is grain free food good for Boxers?

Boxers can develop heart disease, and some diets have been studied in connection with heart problems in dogs. Ask your vet before choosing a grain free food.

Can I free feed a Boxer puppy?

Measured meals are better. They help with house training and weight control.
