Why it matters for Boxers
Boxers are friendly and playful, but they are also strong and sometimes boisterous. A dog that has met many people as a puppy learns that visitors are normal. A dog that has not may jump, spin or panic.
What we do before pickup
Our puppies are raised with individual attention and socialization from the beginning, which gives them a head start. Your job is to keep adding to that foundation.
The checklist
- 10 different people, including a child, a person in a hat and someone with a cane
- 5 surfaces such as tile, grass, gravel, carpet and a metal grate
- Household sounds like the vacuum, a blender and a doorbell
- Car rides that end somewhere good
- Gentle handling of paws, ears and mouth
Safe socializing before all vaccines
Ask your vet which places are safe. Carry your puppy in public, invite healthy vaccinated adult dogs to your home and avoid dog parks until your vet says it is time.
Puppy classes
A well run puppy class lets young dogs play and learn cues. Ask what vaccines are required and watch a session first. Pick instructors who use rewards, not force.
If your puppy seems scared
Slow down. Give more distance, offer a treat and let the puppy approach. Never push a puppy toward something it fears.
Tie it to training
Social skills and manners grow together. Read the Boxer temperament and training guide to see how to reward calm behavior, and use the first year care guide to plan the weeks ahead.
