Caring for a Boxer puppy in Washington's weather
Western Washington is cool and rainy for much of the year. Boxers have short coats and little body fat, so a wet puppy loses heat quickly. Use a waterproof coat and a towel by the door, and dry your puppy after every walk.
Damp weather encourages skin infections and sore paws. Dry between the toes, and check ears since a wet ear can turn into an infection.
Eastern Washington has hot dry summers and snowy winters, so the care changes with the side of the Cascades you live on.
Seasons in Washington
- Spring is wet and muddy.
- Summer is mild and dry, with a few hot spells.
- Fall is rainy and windy.
- Winter is cold and dark, so plan indoor play.
Health risks to know in Washington
Standing water can carry leptospirosis, so ask your vet about the vaccine. Wild mushrooms in damp yards can poison curious puppies, and ticks live in grassy areas in the east. For a full list of Boxer health topics, see the Boxer health guide.
